Olympians and World Champions Lead Field Of Professional Triathletes Set To Compete In 2019 Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon


SAN FRANCISCO – (May 7, 2019) IMG, a global leader in sports, events, media and fashion, today announced the pro field for the 2019 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon set to take place on Sunday, June 9. The line-up includes Olympian Ben Kanute (USA), Olympian Jarrod Shoemaker (AUS), Olympian Paula Findlay (CAN), IRONMAN 70.3 World Champion Holly Lawrence (GBR) and more.

2018 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon Champions Kanute and Sarah Haskins-Korteum (USA) return to defend their titles this year. Both Kanute and Haskins-Korteum recently claimed first place finishes at St. Anthony’s Triathlon. The field also includes 2017 Escape from Alcatraz Champion Lauren Goss (USA) who just won the 2018 IRONMAN 70.3 Lima.

After a two-year hiatus, 2016 Rio Olympian and 2016 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon Joe Maloy (USA) has returned to triathlon. Maloy recently placed third at St. Anthony’s Triathlon, sharing the podium with first place Kanute and second place Jason West.

“I am thrilled to be returning to competition after a couple of years away from the sport,” said Maloy. “Winning Escape back in 2016 was one of the highlights of my triathlon career, and this race holds a special place in my heart. Goals put direction to our actions. Escape 2019 was in mind when I decided to return to professional competition. I can't wait to get back on that boat!”

Six-time Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon Champion Andy Potts will also compete. Potts represented the United States in the 2004 Olympics, is a seven-time IRONMAN champion and a 28-time IRONMAN 70.3 champion. Most recently, he was victorious at the 2019 Challenge Cancun.

The pros will join 2,000 amateur triathletes for the 39th year of this annual event. The full list of professional triathletes set to compete in the 2019 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon includes:

Top triathletes from around the world will take over the streets and waters of San Francisco for the 2019 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon on a course showcasing the beauty of the city. Triathletes will hit the water at 7:30 a.m. to embark on a challenging 1.5-mile swim from Alcatraz Island to the shoreline of Marina Green, an 18-mile twisting bike ride through the Presidio, and an 8-mile trail run out to Baker Beach and up the infamous 400-plus step Sand Ladder. To finish the race, triathletes will follow a path back under the Golden Gate Bridge, pass Crissy Field and finish on the grass at Marina Green. Fans can experience the excitement at Marina Green, where the swim exit, athlete transition area and finish line are easily visible.
